Emily hooning

Home and family - 7 weeks ago

Emily has a little buggy she can ride on and push with her feet or that splits apart so she can use it to learn to walk. She’s not able to do either, so I’ve been pushing her around, and occasionally putting her into a skid, which she loves. ‘Hooning’ is a Kiwi / British word for racing around.

Medical mystery solved

Home and family - 8 weeks ago

The doctor called last night and said my blood test came back showing I had a mild form of Hepatitis! I don’t know why, but I never really press my medical professionals for as much detail as I should, perhaps to avoid appearing panicky. Looking it up later, I hope he meant Hepatitis A, which you can get from contaminated food and which should clear up in a matter of weeks. I’m to have another blood test then.

House painting update 2

Home and family - 9 weeks ago

After three months of rainy weekends, I got out there last weekend and picked off the first of the three bay window frames. I did the remaining two this weekend and now, with the exception of the steps and deck, the front of the house is almost done.

Medical mystery

Home and family - 2 months ago

I’ve been waking up with serious headaches most mornings for about 11 or 12 days now, and I’ve also been itching around my middle despite not having a rash or anything. On one night I even had hot and cold flushes. I went to see my doctor in the village before work today and he was equally confused.

Emily outside

Home and family - 2 months ago

It was a lovely sunny morning this morning so we took some photos of Emily out on the front lawn whilst I was supposed to be painting the house. She’s now just over eight months old.

Escape from the World of Warcraft

Other interests - 3 months ago

These days I am no longer much of a gamer. The last time I played was GTA4 maybe six weeks ago, and I haven’t finished it yet. The last time I was seriously hooked on a game was Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, a game so addictive to some that it has been dubbed Warcrack. Today I logged into the admin site and I noticed with satisfaction that I had not played in over a year.

Another modelling job

Home and family - 3 months ago

Emily had another modelling job today that came in from her agency - ha! It was for the cover of a scientific report on the human genome and required a shot of five babies sitting in nappies, looking up. Louise tells me Emily was the youngest, kept her pose and was very good. The others were all much older and kept getting up and wandering off. It sounded like chaos and they will probably have to photoshop the shot together.

A-Z of New Zealand stamps

Creative life / Other interests - 3 months ago

The NZ post has released a set of fifty cent stamps featuring a complete A-Z of kiwi icons and traditions. They’re unusually typographic for stamps and quite good fun. I spotted them at the local post shop and bought a pack containing a free A1 poster that explains each one.

Back to work

Home and family - 3 months ago

Quite unexpectedly, I had a totally different post-op recovery period from my previous, identical operation last year. After the eyepatch was taken off the next day, perfect vision had returned to my eye that evening, and that being my best eye, I was incredibly relieved. Last time it took days for my vision to fully return. It was very bloodshot though, and I still needed to take painkillers.

Eye operation

Home and family - 3 months ago

Tomorrow I’m going in for a vitrectomy on my left eye. I had the same procedure on my right eye last year. I’ve been acutely short-sighted (-14.5 in both eyes) since I was a child, and about eight years ago I started noticing cloudiness in my vision which I dismissed as deposits on my contact lenses.
