Eye operation
Uncategorized - 2 years ago
Tomorrow I’m going in for a vitrectomy on my left eye. I had the same procedure on my right eye last year. I’ve been acutely short-sighted (-14.5 in both eyes) since I was a child, and about eight years ago I started noticing cloudiness in my vision which I dismissed as deposits on my contact lenses.

Semi-Permanent ’08
Uncategorized - 2 years ago
This was the first Semi-Permanent design ‘festival’ I’ve been to and it was great. I had to leave before the final speakers on both days (so I missed Sagmeister) but the others I saw were all really inspiring.

The Mini’s second birthday

It’s been exactly two years since I took delivery of my prized Mini Cooper S, and that’s as good an excuse as any to introduce her now. I took this photo that day, shortly after we rode up in the glass elevator to a strange departure lounge area (classy touch) and the dealer presented her to me.

Better by Design 3.0 goes live
Uncategorized - 2 years ago
The third version of the Better by Design website went live overnight. Better by Design is a New Zealand Trade & Enterprise programme encouraging New Zealand exporters to incorporate design into their businesses and offerings.
I also designed the previous version which had started to look a little dated after only 2½ years. At the time I was very proud of it, and it won a silver Best Award in 2006. I hope this one stays fresh a little longer.

House painting begins

We bought our place in April 2005 and have been meaning to change the drab blue-grey scheme (as seen above in a photo from February) ever since. Over the past few weeks, having observed numerous colour test patches during various light and weather conditions, we decided on the final colours for the house and started painting.

Five years in New Zealand
Uncategorized - 2 years ago
I first arrived in New Zealand on March 13th 2003. Perhaps it’s age-related but the months and years have just fallen off the calendar, which must be a good thing. So much has happened – selling the flat in London, buying a country home, getting married and starting a family.
Last night I arrived home to find Louise had baked me a cake to mark the occasion. As enjoyable as life in New Zealand is, Louise and now Emily are undoubtedly the main reason I’m here.

Home’s historical account completed
Uncategorized - 2 years ago

I finally finished the account of our house, incorporating the information and photographs supplied by its former occupant Lois during her recent visit. Be warned, most of you will find it a little bit dull unless perhaps you are interested in Victorian villas.

Shed used for wine bottle shoot
Uncategorized - 3 years ago

I returned from paternity leave to find that the team at Alt had been trying to locate a rustic wooden shed in which to photograph some bottles for Farmgate Wines. I suggested they use a shed at home which, thanks to a recent visit from one of the property’s previous occupants, I now know to be at least 40 years old.

Visitor reveals home’s history
Uncategorized - 3 years ago
A few days ago, a lady called Lois pulled up outside our house and informed us that she had lived there as a child and that her grandfather had built it. The house was built sometime in the 1900s and I had always hoped a previous occupant would call in one day and tell us more about the history of the property.

Emily is now home, just two days after she was born. As you can see, she is 6lbs 1oz of pure cute, and I am a very proud dad indeed.
